How to Check Your 401(k) Contributions and Fringe Benefit Breakdown

PSOs, we encourage everyone to regularly review their retirement contributions and fringe benefit allocations. It is important to make sure the amounts being allocated toward your benefits match what is actually being deposited into your retirement account.

There are two accounts you should know how to access: Empower Retirement and Boon Benefits.

Below are instructions for accessing both accounts and what to look for.

1. How to Check Your 401(k) Contributions Through Empower

Your Empower account allows you to review your actual retirement account balance and see the contributions that have been deposited.

Step 1: Visit Empower

Go to: https://www.empower.com/

Step 2: Log in to your account

  • Select the login option.
  • Enter your username and password.
  • Complete any required security verification.

Step 3: Register if you do not have an account

If you have never registered, select the registration option and follow the instructions to verify your identity and create your account.

If you have trouble registering or accessing your account, contact Empower or your plan administrator for assistance.

Step 4: Review your retirement contributions

Once logged in, locate your retirement plan and review your account activity or transaction history.

Pay attention to:

  • Your current 401(k) balance.
  • Contribution amounts deposited.
  • Dates the contributions were posted.
  • The contribution history for each applicable period.

We encourage everyone to keep copies of their contribution history for their personal records.

2. How to Check Your Fringe Benefit Breakdown Through Boon

Your Boon Benefits portal allows you to review how your fringe benefits are allocated. This is important when comparing the amounts allocated toward retirement with the deposits appearing in Empower.

Step 1: Visit the Boon Benefits Portal

Go to: https://boonbenefits.com/

Step 2: Log in or register

Sign in using your existing account.

If you do not have an account, register using the company code below.

Step 3: Select the Fringe tab

Once logged in, click the Fringe tab to view your benefits breakdown.

Step 4: Select the coverage period

Choose the coverage period you want to review.

Step 5: Review your breakdown

Look at the amounts listed for your benefits, including:

  • Medical insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Other listed benefit costs
  • The remaining fringe amount allocated toward retirement, if applicable

Keep a copy of your breakdown so you can compare it with your Empower contribution history.

3. What to Do If You Notice a Difference or Discrepancy

Please review both accounts.

  • Boon shows your fringe benefit allocation.
  • Empower shows the retirement contributions actually deposited into your account.

If you notice a difference, missing contribution, or anything that does not appear correct:

  1. Take screenshots of your Boon fringe benefit breakdown.
  2. Take screenshots of your Empower contribution history.
  3. Keep copies of any other supporting records.
  4. File a grievance through the PSO Boston Local grievance portal:

File a Grievance

You will need to create an account if you have not already done so. Once registered, follow the steps in the portal to submit your grievance and attach your supporting screenshots.

The more documentation you provide, the easier it is for the Local to review and address your concern.

4. Need Help? Contact Your Local

We want every member to have access to their benefit and retirement information and to know where to turn if something does not look right.

If you have questions or need assistance accessing either account, contact the Local:

Email: local@psoboston.org

Mobile App Availability

Please take the time to check both accounts. Keep your records, and don't ignore discrepancies. If something doesn't look right, document it and file a grievance so the Local can review it.
